I've been pregnant four times and been blessed to give birth to four healthy babies. Each pregnancy was as unique as the infants themselves. I reminisce with great fondness, feeling the baby wriggling and kicking within my belly. I remember back pain and uncomfortable sleeping positions, offset by glowing skin, lustrous hair and the nostalgia of not worrying about my ever increasing waist size. I can think of only one thing I regret about expecting and that is not taking the time to create a an artistic memory (a bump photo) of each of my pregnancies. In fact the only artistic image I have during pregnancy is with my youngest child.
I guess I need to give myself a bit of a break as I have not always been a photographer, in fact I only started taking photography seriously when my third child was a baby. Don't get me wrong I have snap shots of each pregnancy but no artistic images of the first three pregnancies. Snap shots are great but they are often awkward images shot in poor light and don't do justice to the stunning beauty of the moment or capture the radiance of the mom to be.
I have created images of the "bump" for single mom's to be, with siblings of the unborn child, couples, families, and women of varying ages who simply wish to capture the magic of the moment. I usually take these images in the third trimester towards the end of the pregnancy. Sometimes the maternity images are taken at home, sometimes outside and quite often they are taken in my studio.
I especially enjoy recording images of mom and family members such as the siblings of the unborn child, the father, or even grandparents. Including the siblings is a great way to ensure your children know that they too play an important role both in your life and in the life of the newest member of the family. In fact, in my mind the more connections an image has to family members, the richer the image.
Are you or is someone you know pregnant? Why not indulge and give yourself or this special person a gift of art which captures not only the beautiful curves and stunning glow of pregnancy, but also captures the eager anticipation of meeting the little one face to face for the very first time. What better way to show your child how happy you were to first carry them and then introduce them to this big, wondrous world we live in.
I can't think of anything that says "I could hardly wait to meet you" better than a professional photo session during pregnancy.
